Finavia is developing Kuusamo Airport: due to repairs, there will be no flights from 17 July to 15 August 2023

“By developing the airport’s infrastructure, we can ensure safe and smooth traffic, which also supports the Christmas and winter travel that is important for tourism in Kuusamo. We are investing a significant amount, a total of EUR 2.5 million, in the renovation of Kuusamo Airport,” says Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s VP Lapland airports.
Nearly EUR 2 million of the total investment will be used for replacing the runway lighting system. Finavia’s climate targets and energy efficiency have been taken into account in the improvements to the lighting system. The existing runway lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED technology. The renovation work in the summer will also include resurfacing part of the apron and the entire taxiway.
There will be a break in flights between Kuusamo and Helsinki from 17 July to 15 August. The terminal will also be closed during that period. During the break in flights, Rovaniemi, Kemi-Tornio and Oulu airports will serve the residents and tourists of the Kuusamo region.
The renovation will employ 10–15 people in the Kuusamo region, and several local businesses are involved in carrying it out. In addition, Finavia employees from Kuusamo, Oulu and Kajaani airports will take part in the project.
Finavia is actively working to build flight connections and develop the infrastructure and service level of its airports to meet the needs and wishes of international passengers.
Kuusamo Airport is one of Finavia’s Lapland airports, and there is air traffic to the airport all year round. Especially during the winter season, passenger volumes increase significantly. Following the renovation, Kuusamo Airport will be ready for the new winter season.
“One of our most significant marketing advantages is the low emissions of our airports. For tourists, this is a sign of a responsible travel destination and the work we do to promote sustainable development. Our next goal is to achieve net zero carbon emissions at four airports in Lapland this year. Kuusamo Airport is one of these four airports,” Jonna Pietilä says.
