Nyrok City exhibition – Invitation to an open press event on 9 October from 11:00 to 13:00

Nyrok City – For Your Eyes Only is an exhibition that provides a glimpse to the history of Finnish popular music and comics. The legendary Nyrok City comics of Mauri Kunnas, published between 1975 and 1986, took a bold look at contemporary phenomena in popular culture and made jokes at the expense of both Finnish and foreign musicians and film stars. The original artwork presented at the exhibition feature such stars as Vesa-Matti Loiri, Frederik, and the members of Eppu Normaali and Hanoi Rocks.

The generation that grew up with Nyrok City can relive the golden age of Finnish rock music through these witty stories and their humorous dialogue. Younger generations can see the exhibition as a depiction of past times and an overview of the early days of Finnish rock music. The original artwork of Nyrok City has never before been widely displayed, as Kunnas is very protective of his works, which are made with easily fading watercolor paint. In addition to 12 originals of the comics, the exhibition also displays sketches and individual drawings of famous Finnish rockstars.

The exhibition is made in partnership with Otava Publishing Company, who is celebrating the exhibition by releasing an updated edition of the comic book collection ”The very best & the wörst of Nyrok City.” The new edition contains a number of updates: some things have been removed and a few previously omitted pieces have been added. The book is also available at Exhibition Centre WeeGee’s EMMA Shop.

The exhibition is curated by Mauri Kunnas together with journalist and comics expert Harri Römpötti. The two curators can be interviewed and photographed at the open press event on Monday 9 October between 11:00 and 13:00. The press conference will be held at the Nyrok City exhibition in Exhibition Centre WeeGee, Ahertajantie 5, Tapiola, Espoo. Participation in the press conference requires advance registration.
