Varma’s new Sustainability Programme focuses on actions that truly make a difference
As the world changes around us, we continue our efforts to advance sustainability. Responsibility for pension assets obliges us to prepare for the future. Our new Sustainability Programme for 2026–2030 is now complete.

In our updated Sustainability Programme for 2026–2030, we focus on actions that truly make a difference. By this, we mean actions and matters that are essential and important to Varma and our customers and which we can also influence ourselves. The new Sustainability Programme builds on our two previous sustainability programmes.
“Sustainability today is under pressure from a variety of conflicting national interests and geopolitical tensions. At Varma, sustainability has been developed with a long-term view, and it will continue to be a priority for us in the future. Our new Sustainability Programme ensures that sustainability is advanced through concrete actions together with our clients and partners,” says Varma’s President and CEO Risto Murto.
The programme also helps us implement the goals we have defined in our strategy, which focusses on actions that truly make a difference.
“Our Sustainability Programme is not just a list of targets, but daily actions through which we can impact the future. Climate change, biodiversity and human rights are important themes for us. The programme enables us to ensure pension security, reduce the environmental impact of our investments and promote good work ability and employee well-being,” says Varma’s Chief Sustainability Officer Hanna Kaskela.
Client experiences played an important role in developing the programme
The Sustainability Programme is based on the environmental and social impacts we have identified, together with our stakeholders, as material, as well as on the risks and opportunities in our value chain.
We interviewed our clients to find out what they expect from us, and we learned that what they would like to see from us are concrete actions and responsibility in everyday life. We are committed to operating ethically, fostering trust in our client relationships and promoting sustainability themes that are both important to our stakeholders and essential to us.
Employees from different Varma business functions were involved in developing the contents of the Sustainability Programme. With the goals we have set in the programme, we aim to align our actions with the expectations of our stakeholders and clients.
We are building a sustainable future together
The Sustainability Programme guides and develops Varma’s sustainability efforts. The programme consists of four parts.
Safeguarding your pensions: We manage our customers’ pension matters with efficiency and care. Our service is proactive and attentive to our customers’ individual needs. We ensure the accrual of pensions through statutory pension insurance, and we pay pensions now and in the future. We make sure that when a pensioner retires, their income is not interrupted. We provide support to employees if their work ability weakens.
Preparing for the future by investing responsibly: We invest profitably and securely. Our investment decisions take into account the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and geopolitical instability, while also identifying new opportunities. We promote responsible practices across our investment targets. Our investments in domestic growth create new jobs and strengthen the economy.
We promote sustainable work ability: Our aim is to ensure that as many people as possible can participate in working life. We support our corporate clients in preventing and managing work ability risks.
We are a good workplace for Varma employees. We are committed to promoting a good working life and are therefore fostering an inclusive and humane work community. To us, a good workplace also means pay equality and transparency, and support for balancing different phases of life and careers. Thriving Varma employees succeed in their work.
We regularly monitor the progress of our goals
The Sustainability Programme consists of detailed, concrete actions and measures. We have defined goals and measures for the various parts of the Sustainability Programme, as well as indicators for measuring their implementation.
The goals are monitored alongside the goals of Varma’s various business functions, and the achievement of the programme’s goals is examined in more detail every six months. We report on the progress of the Sustainability Programme and the achievement of its goals in our Sustainability Statement.
