Clean energy transition and biodiversity featured at Syke events at the COP30 Finland Pavilion

Share

Finnish Environment Institute will participate in the Finland Pavilion in the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) taking place in Belém, Brazil in November. Two seminars will be hosted by our experts from the ongoing Clean Energy System Transition – (REPower-CEST) project.

As part of the Pavilion, Finnish Environment Institute is organising two seminars presenting recent research in the field of climate change mitigation. The seminars will focus on clean energy transition and its effects on biodiversity.

“Building a clean, just and sustainable energy system is crucial for societies to meet our climate goals. Investing in renewable technologies should, however, not come at too high cost of other environmental or social impacts, such as loss of biodiversity, resource consumption, hazardous emissions or noise”, says Laura Sokka, Principal researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute.

“That’s why we are looking at the issue from multiple angles and research fields while building a roadmap for the implementation of energy transition”, she continues.

In the Finland Pavilion more than 40 forerunner companies, universities, cities, funds, networks, industry associations, civil societies, ministries and NGOs are joining forces in the Finland Pavilion. The Pavilion emphasises Finland’s active role in the global climate leadership presenting how Finnish institutions and companies are enhancing climate solutions through research, innovation, digitalisation and low-carbon industrial solutions.

Carbon neutrality is still achievable for Finland – immediate and decisive action on clean technology and land use is needed31.10.2025 14:41:40 EET | Press release

New long-term climate scenarios demonstrate that Finland is positioned well to achieve carbon neutrality after 2040 and become carbon negative by mid-century. Reaching this goal requires strengthening both technologically and naturally produced carbon sinks. A report by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), and the Geological Survey of Finland GTK also reveals that citizens and companies alike are highly committed to achieving climate targets.
