Finland-headquartered DC fast-charging manufacturer Kempower has installed its 4,000th EV charging connector in the UK less than four years after expanding to the UK market. The milestone stands as a symbol of both Kempower’s progression to become a leading UK charging provider and the overall expansion of charging infrastructure as the country embraces EVs.
Since the start of 2022, Kempower has supplied over 4,000 connectors to more than 1,200 charging stations at over 800 locations nationwide in the UK, delivering more than 260,000 kW of power installed. In 3 million total charging transactions, 120 MWh of energy has already been delivered to passenger EV drivers and commercial fleets by Kempower chargers.
Of the 30,000 DC public charging connectors available in the UK, about 3,000 are Kempower units. The manufacturer’s dynamically distributed technology, which ensures each charger can intelligently balance power between vehicles, providing faster and more efficient charging, has been a key element to its market success.
Kempower was originally founded in Lahti, Finland, in 2017 as a spin-out from the welding company Kemppi. The company, which develops both hardware and software solutions, has since grown globally and has chargers on every continent, with the UK being one of its most successful markets.
The company initially launched its solutions in the UK with charging sites in Wolverhampton and Banbury, in partnership with national EV charging operator Osprey, before its network of chargers expanded nationwide.
Major UK projects delivered by Kempower since then include working with Sainsbury’s as it became the first UK supermarket to operate its own charging network, powering electric buses for major public transport operators, and supplying fast charging for DP World London Gateway’s groundbreaking straddle carrier electrification project for port operations.
Most recently, the 4,000th Kempower charger was installed at a shopping park in Southport in collaboration with brand new UK CPO EVCP solutions. Four charging bays at Kew Retail Park mark the first in the partnership between the two companies, which is expected to develop as EVCP solutions builds its own public charging network, EVCPs Charge & Go!, in regional and rural locations.
Rolle Nieminen, Kempower’s Head of Sales for the UK and Ireland, who has worked for the UK branch of the company since it launched, said: “I’m exceptionally proud of how Kempower has blossomed from a Nordic startup and new market player to a leading provider of charging infrastructure in the UK. We’ve already delivered projects that span the breadth of the charging industry and we’ll continue to drive change by leading innovation, empowering hard-to-abate sectors to electrify and supporting EV adoption.”
