DNA and KAJ surprised with an iconic musical performance at the Sibelius Monument – Watch the recording
To celebrate Finnish Music Day and Jean Sibelius’s birthday, an extraordinary and visually striking performance took place this morning, December 8, at the Sibelius Monument in Töölö, Helsinki. The popular band KAJ delivered a surprise rendition of the beloved Finlandia hymn together with the 35-member chamber choir from Vaskivuori Upper Secondary School. The version was produced by Jean Sibelius’s great-grandson.

The surprise performance was organized by DNA as a tribute to Finnish music and its significance. The surprise performance with KAJ and the Vaskivuori Upper Secondary School chamber choir was intended to celebrate the power of music and offer an experience that can now be enjoyed by all Finns through smart devices. According to Teosto, smartphones have, for the first time in history, become the most popular way for Finns to listen to music, alongside car radios.
“We wanted to create a surprising and truly communal experience with KAJ that would continue to resonate through the recording. Music touches and connects people, just like the networks we maintain and continuously develop. By combining both in a unique way and respecting Finnish musical heritage, we created a memorable performance for everyone to enjoy on this national celebration day", says Mikko Saarentaus, Vice President of Entertainment Business at DNA.
DNA has observed a clear increase in music consumption via smart devices, as well as growing emphasis on sound quality when purchasing electronics. According to DNA’s annual Digital Life survey, more than half of Finns (53%) use music apps on their smart devices.
"With this initiative, we also want to remind people that music is closer to our everyday lives than ever before, and technology keeps offering new ways to enjoy it. We have responded to changing entertainment habits by providing solutions such as support for three-dimensional Dolby Atmos sound, so music and movies can be experienced with even higher quality", Saarentaus adds.
The Finlandia hymn is one of the most iconic songs in Finnish music, making it a natural choice for this tribute. The interpretation honors and reflects the original composition. Behind the scenes was also Jean Sibelius’s great-grandson, Lauri Porra, who produced this special version of Finlandia.
“It was wonderful to perform the Finlandia hymn on Finnish Music Day, and even as a bilingual. Finlandia is a monumental piece, and we want our performance to pay tribute both to it and to Finnish music", say KAJ members Kevin Holmström, Axel Åhman, and Jakob Norrgård.
