DNA strengthens its core network between Finland and Sweden with EU funding – improving connections in Western and Northern Finland
DNA is implementing a two-part development project for land connections in core networks between 2026 and 2028, aimed at enhancing fiber connections, particularly between Finland and Sweden. The project will also utilize some of DNA's existing infrastructure while strengthening regional networks in Western and Northern Finland. A total investment of 5.4 million euros will be made in the project, with 1.62 million euros covered by EU funding support.

"We are connecting the networks of Northern and Western Finland to build a total of 400 kilometers of new fiber-based backbone network between Southern Ostrobothnia and Northern Sweden's Norrbotten, as well as between Kainuu and Norrbotten. This project enhances the security and reliability of cross-border connections. At the same time, it enables the expansion of the fiber network into new areas where availability has been limited so far," says Jarkko Laari, Vice President of Networks at DNA.
The project includes two routes. The western route between Southern Ostrobothnia and Norrbotten will provide a direct fiber connection from Norrbotten to Western Finland upon completion. The eastern route from Kainuu to Norrbotten will also contribute to reliability and increase capacity towards Northern Ostrobothnia and beyond. The eastern and western routes will share the Northern Ostrobothnia to Norrbotten segment. With this project, the regional reliability of DNA's core network in exceptional situations will improve, as the new connections further secure and strengthen the existing links.
DNA will next prepare detailed route plans, apply for necessary regional permits, and then carry out construction work of up to 400 kilometers. The land connection will also provide DNA and its customers with a strategic advantage: it will increase capacity, improve network resilience, and ensure connectivity even in disruption situations. At the same time, it will enhance competition, supporting reasonable prices and high service levels.
The European Commission's CEF Digital program has granted DNA 1.62 million euros in support of the project. DNA will invest a total of 5.4 million euros in the project, meaning that EU funding covers about 30% of the costs.
