The Board of Hanken School of Economics appoints the rector for a maximum of five years at a time. At its meeting on 2 February 2026, the Board decided that the current Rector, Ingmar Björkman, whose five-year term ends on 31 July 2027, will have his mandate extended by one year until 31 July 2028. According to current retirement regulations, Björkman retires in the autumn of 2028.

The rector leads Hanken’s operations and is responsible for ensuring that the activities are managed in an economical, efficient, and succesful manner.

“During Rector Björkman’s first term, the School has developed in a positive direction. He has led Hanken with great commitment and demonstrated the ability and professional competence required to successfully lead a university. The Board looks forward to continuing this work together,” says Christoph Vitzthum, chair of Hanken’s Board.

Later in spring, new deans will be appointed for a period up to one year longer than the rector’s valid term (31.7.2029).
