Situational awareness in current operational environment – AOS combines operational efficiency, resilience and safety

The Finnish AOS innovation—designed to improve operational and economic efficiency—is being showcased in London 17–19 March 2026. The AOS system, developed by Finavia Corporation and Siili Solutions, is revolutionizing operational efficiency and information sharing. According to key business indicators, it improves operational predictability, resource efficiency, and management of disruptions.

Finnish expertise in technology and innovation is once again on display—this time within the world of airports and aviation. Finavia and Siili Solutions have collaborated for years to develop the Airport Operational Status (AOS) system. The result is a customisable solution that enables organisations and communities to share real-time situational information with an unlimited number of users. Finavia and Siili Solutions will present the system in London at Passenger Terminal Expo between 17 and 19 March. The event is an internationally recognised aviation industry exhibition.
Airports are technically complex, highly regulated 24/7 environments where systems must have high availability, secured integrations and enable seamless collaboration between airport stakeholders. As air traffic develops and increases, companies in the aviation business must be able to scale operations and ensure effectiveness.
To minimize traffic irregularities and increase resilience in the event of disruptions, from 2027 onwards, major airports within the European Union must be able to provide situational information to the Europe-wide network. This new regulation includes a critical section called AOP (Airport Operations Plan). The AOP is a jointly agreed, continuously updated situational picture and operational plan for an individual airport, enabling all airport stakeholders to make coordinated decisions. Finavia’s AOS system can be easily integrated into the new requirements that European airports are now facing.
“We have spent several years developing the AOS together with Siili Solutions, and now have hundreds of thousands of hours of operational experience with the system. We’re very pleased. It boosts our cost efficiency and helps us run our daily operations smoother. As European airports move to the next level of shared situational awareness, AOS offers a proven, ready-to-deploy solution to the challenges many airports are facing,” says Jani Ceder, Head of Airport Operations Centre at Finavia.
From data inputs to situational awareness and a shared operational picture
AOS is a digital system owned by Finavia and developed by Siili Solutions. It is used not only across Finavia’s 20 airports, but also in Tallinn Airport in Estonia. Swedavia will be introducing AOS at Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden in the beginning of 2027. The system combines top-level Finnish software development with a user-driven, scalable solution that works equally well at small regional airports as it does in the largest international hubs.
In addition, users can also easily share their observations about the effectiveness of processes or any information that’s important for the entire community to know. The system also allows for the reporting of disruptions, which can be conveniently communicated to the entire airport community through a single channel.
“In Finavia’s AOS system, we combine data capabilities with integration expertise to deliver real-time, shared situational awareness for all airport stakeholders. This enables data-driven decision-making across the airport ecosystem. In possible disruption scenarios, structured workflows and checklists enable real-time and role-based communication with clear ownership of responsibility, accelerating incident response time by 20-30 minutes. The mobile application extends this capability to the field, delivering real-time information to thousands of users and enabling instant reporting of irregularities to the airport operations centre,” says Karoliina Tiuraniemi, Head of Traffic & Logistics at Siili Solutions.
A Finnish High-End Solution for All Industries, Worldwide
AOS is designed as a modular and scalable platform, making it a unique solution not only for aviation but also for other industries. The system is well-suited for ports, other transport hubs, logistics centres, and organisations and ecosystems in the energy and industrial sectors.
“If there is a fire alarm, a safety threat, or other congestion, the situational updates and instructions can be instantly shared with the staff, partners, and other stakeholders across the entire operational environment,” Jani Ceder explains.
The system provides all users with real-time situational information about normal and irregular operations and any disruptions that may affect them. It creates a foundation for unified processes, and enables shared KPI monitoring. AOS strengthens cooperation and speeds up decision-making, improving operational efficiency, quality, and resilience. Together, these improvements generate significant cost savings.
AOS plays a significant role in ensuring smooth and well-coordinated operations across Finavia’s airport network. At Helsinki Airport in particular, the system has contributed for years to high levels of stakeholder and passenger satisfaction. It’s a testament to AOS’s efficiency that Helsinki Airport has been selected as the best airport in Europe in its size category seven times in the past eight years, and as the best airport in Northern Europe eight times.
