Occupational safety level classifications published — record number of workplaces received recognition

This year, 145 workplaces received an occupational safety level classification, which is more than ever before. Last year, the corresponding figure was 122. The number of workplaces with zero accidents also increased from last year. A total of 60 workplaces had no accidents that led to absences in 2025.

"Workplaces that received a level classification have worked long term and safety has been built through anticipation, transparency, and collective learning," says Pekka Koskela, chairman of the Steering Group.

Management involvement and joint learning yield results

Workplaces that have received a level classification are united by visible and consistent safety work. There are regular safety walks at the workplaces to examine factors such as equipment safety, ergonomics and cleanliness. The management also actively participates in safety walks and engages in discussion with the personnel.

Safety work is not only limited to preventing accidental injuries, but increasingly extends to supporting work ability and well-being at work.

"Comprehensive work ability management has become stronger at workplaces. This is reflected, for example, in practices related to ergonomics, well-being at work, and psychosocial stress," says Tiina-Mari Monni, Development Manager at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.

Other common traits of workplaces that received a classification include open communication and shared learning. There is active communication about safety via multiple channels, and lessons learned from accidents or near-misses are shared openly also with contractors. 

"Open exchange of information and sharing of good practices strengthens the sense of community and supports the safety competence of the entire work community. Visible commitment by top management is another important part of learning about safety together," Monni emphasises.

Workplaces will share good occupational safety practices at a seminar in April

The Vision Zero Forum is a network of workplaces whose purpose is to motivate and encourage workplaces to work towards a high level of occupational safety and well-being at work. Member workplaces can develop occupational safety systematically and receive recognition for their long-term safety work.

"The forum provides support and ideas to workplaces for the development of occupational safety and well-being at work and a place to share their experiences with others. There are already nearly 600 member workplaces across Finland," Koskela says.

The Vision Zero Forum will organise a seminar that is open for all on 28–29 April 2026 at the Oulu Theater. This year’s theme is “Safety is culture”. At the seminar, workplaces that have received the level classification will also share their experiences on good safety practices.
