EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, in partnership with Saastamoinen Foundation, is launching a new long-term initiative dedicated to sustained collaboration with mid-career contemporary artists. The initiative is introduced through production support for new works by Jenna Sutela, Eglė Budvytytė, and P. Staff, all participating in the 61st Venice Biennale – La Biennale di Venezia.

The 2026 edition of the Venice Biennale serves as the international launch platform for this new model of collaboration between EMMA and Saastamoinen Foundation. Moving beyond single exhibitions and one-off commissions, the initiative establishes multi-year partnerships designed to support artists through critical phases of their careers. The production support provided for the works presented in Venice will evolve into sustained collaborations, culminating in each artist’s first major museum survey exhibition at EMMA.

“Mid-career represents a pivotal stage in an artist’s trajectory, yet it often lacks sustained institutional support. By committing to long-term collaboration, we aim to provide artists with the time, space, and continuity needed to develop ambitious work and deepen their practice,” says EMMA’s Director, Krist Gruijthuijsen

The initiative reflects a shared vision of fostering artistic development, research, and institutional recognition through continuity, care, and long-term engagement. Bringing together artists from the Nordic and Baltic regions within a broader international contemporary art context, it encourages dialogue between regional practices and global discourse. The exhibitions at EMMA will be developed in collaboration with international partner institutions and supported through dedicated funding and acquisitions.

“Many of the selected artists are already represented in the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection, allowing this collaboration to build meaningfully on existing relationships. We look forward to collaborating with these artists,” says Päivi Karttunen, Chair of the Saastamoinen Foundation Artistic Board.

The three works supported by the initiative and presented at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia are Aeolian Suite by Jenna Sutela at the Pavilion of Finland; Animism Sings Anarchy, a film installation by Eglė Budvytytė at the Lithuanian Pavilion; and Terminal Lucidity by P. Staff, presented in a group show CANICULA at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto by the Fondazione Between Art and Film on the occasion of the Biennale.

EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art

EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art fosters a unique dialogue between modern art, design, and contemporary art. Located in the Exhibition Centre WeeGee in Tapiola, Espoo, EMMA is housed in a former printing house designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori (1924–1992), an iconic example of 1960s industrial architecture. With over 6,000 square metres of exhibition space, EMMA is the largest art museum in Finland. Founded in 2006, the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The museum presents around six exhibitions annually, alongside collection displays from Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection, Collection Kakkonen, and the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation. EMMA also provides expertise in public art projects commissioned by the City of Espoo, integrating art into urban spaces and everyday life.

Saastamoinen Foundation

Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection is one of Finland’s most significant collections of Finnish and international art. With nearly 3,000 works, the collection is housed at EMMA and continues to grow through active acquisitions. Saastamoinen Foundation supports the advancement of science and art in society and is a founding partner of EMMA. The origins of the foundation lie in the home collection of a Kuopio-based industrial family from the 1910s. It was established in 1968 to offer invigorating impulses of science and art to society, and it has since supported the expansion, preservation, and exhibition of the art collection.

Emma’s Future: A Letter from Krist Gruijthuijsen19.5.2026 08:30:00 EEST | Press release

Dear Reader, This is Emma. Today, 19 May, is her name day. She is about to turn 20 years old and finds herself at a moment of transition, gradually moving from adolescence into adulthood. As she approaches her birthday, she pauses to reflect. Growing up is inevitable, yet in this moment in time it is not without its challenges. The belief systems she was once so firmly raised with are dissolving, asking her to reconsider how she understands the world around her. For two decades, Emma has made her home in a former printing factory—a striking Brutalist landmark from the 1960s, designed by Finnish architect Aarno Ruusuvuori in Espoo, Finland. Within this distinctive architectural setting, space and art have continuously shaped one another, forming the environment in which she has grown up. Emma has come of age through relationships: with her communities, with the artists she works alongside, and with the collections she cares for. Collaboration has been central to her development, shaping
