Norelco Launches a New Generation of Modular Secondary Substations
3.11.2026 09:41:45 EET | Norelco | Tiedote
Norelco’s new NorGrid family of modular secondary substations introduces modularity throughout the entire lifecycle of electricity distribution. Thanks to swappable and expandable modules, the substation can evolve alongside the electrical grid, eliminating the need for a completely new investment.

Electrification, shifts in consumption patterns, and the ongoing evolution of electrical grids are placing new demands on substations. It is neither possible nor necessary to anticipate every future requirement at the time of the initial investment.
NorGrid can be configured to meet current needs and subsequently expanded, upgraded, or modified. Interchangeable modules—including switchgear, transformers, and low-voltage units—allow the system to evolve throughout its operational lifespan. This ensures that customers do not need to over-invest today to account for uncertain future requirements.
Safety, Operational Reliability, and Usability as Design Foundations
Safety and ease of use have been the guiding principles in the design of NorGrid substations. Each unit is designed, constructed, and tested in accordance with the IEC 62271-1 and IEC 62271-202 standards. Safety and operational reliability are verified through short-circuit and internal arc testing, while the equipment has also undergone rigorous environmental testing. Operational tasks have been simplified through the use of clear, field-specific controls.
The substation can also be equipped with solutions that support remote monitoring, remote control, protection, and network management.
Long service life and lifecycle services
The design of the NorGrid modular secondary substation is guided by a holistic approach, ensuring its continued use through maintenance, upgrades, and the replacement of specific components as needed.
The product family consists of disconnect switch, transformer, and low-voltage modules, which can be configured to suit various applications and upgraded according to changing requirements.
Norelco Service provides on-site installation and lifecycle services for the substations. Commissioning, remote monitoring, and scheduled maintenance support the operational reliability and systematic upkeep of the equipment throughout its entire service life.
Rapid and eco-friendly manufacturing
NorGrid modular secondary substations are manufactured and assembled at Norelco’s own production facilities in Savonlinna. The units are constructed using domestic hot-dip galvanized steel sheets, processed with modern, automated metalworking machinery. Components are manufactured and assembled in Savonlinna according to Lean principles, ensuring a high-quality, seamless delivery process while reducing logistics costs.
An oil containment tray made of stainless steel is always included in the transformer compartment. This represents a concrete aspect of environmental stewardship: the containment tray serves as a safeguard against potential oil leaks, preventing oil from entering the environment.
From an environmental perspective, the ability to retain existing, functional structures is key. By limiting modifications to only the necessary modules, the need for new materials—as well as the volume of structures requiring demolition—is reduced compared to replacing the entire substation.
NorGrid is more than just a modular secondary substation designed for today’s requirements; it is a platform for electricity distribution that can evolve over the years and decades to come.

Norway’s energy transition hits grid limits – Norelco sees growing demand for Nordic power distribution expertise7.10.2026 09:05:00 EEST | Tiedote
Norway’s electricity generation is diversifying, and electricity consumption is rising rapidly. In September, installed solar power capacity surpassed the one-gigawatt mark for the first time. The electrification of industry, along with the expansion of data centers, transport, and the defense sector, is simultaneously driving up the demand for electricity and grid capacity.
Norjan energiamurros törmää sähköverkon rajoihin – Norelco näkee kasvavaa kysyntää pohjoismaiselle sähkönjakeluosaamiselle7.10.2026 09:04:00 EEST | Tiedote
Norjan sähköntuotanto monipuolistuu ja sähkönkulutus kasvaa nopeasti. Aurinkovoiman asennettu kapasiteetti ylitti syyskuussa ensimmäistä kertaa yhden gigawatin rajan. Teollisuuden sähköistyminen, datakeskukset, liikenne ja puolustus kasvattavat samanaikaisesti sähkön ja verkkokapasiteetin tarvetta.
