You are invited to the press conference for the Ateneum Art Museum’s new collection exhibition, A Question of Time, in the Ateneum Hall on Wednesday 12 April 2023 at 11:00. The exhibition, on display on the first and second floors of the Ateneum, will be open for viewing until 14:00.

The press conference will be opened by the director of the Ateneum, Marja Sakari, who will discuss the new collection exhibition, and how it was conceived and put together.

Through its choice of themes, A Question of Time participates in current 21st-century debate around today’s burning issues. Each theme will be presented by the curator behind it: the chief curator Timo Huusko (Images of a People), the doctoral researcher Mariia Niskavaara (The Age of Nature), the curator of exhibitions Anne-Maria Pennonen (The Age of Nature), the senior researcher Anu Utriainen (Modern Life), and the curator of collections Hanne Selkokari (Art and Power).

The event will be in Finnish. Please register for the event by 6 April 2023.

The Ateneum opens up to the questions of our time

A Question of Time will replace the Ateneum Art Museum’s previous collection exhibition, Stories of Finnish Art, which opened in 2016.

“Our previous collection exhibition was spectacular and diverse. However, in a rapidly changing world, we wanted to approach our collection from a different angle”, says the director of the Ateneum, Marja Sakari.

The new exhibition aims to challenge the way in which the collection of the Finnish National Gallery has traditionally been viewed. The themes that run through different eras and the exceptional juxtapositions in the presentation provide a starting point for this reinterpretation. There are questions ringing in the background. How has the collection been built up over the years? How can it still be a collection for everyone?

“To understand our part in this time, we must take a look through the ages: past, present, and future. The Ateneum collection exhibition, which includes works dating back as far as the 18th century, offers a unique opportunity to do just this. I hope that the exhibition will bring people together and encourage a joint discussion”, says Sakari.

The planning of the collection exhibition has been guided by transparency and the enhancementof the curatorial process through discussions with both Ateneum’s own staff and external contributors. In addition to the beloved and familiar classics, the collection exhibition will include a number of works that have rarely or never been seen in the Ateneum exhibition galleries.

The Ateneum Art Museum has been closed for about a year due to a ventilation renovation. The opening of the exhibition A Question of Time will coincide with the reopening of the museum, on Friday 14 April.

Monipuoliset luontokuvaukset saavat pohtimaan, onko taiteilijan 1800- ja 1900-luvuilla kuvaamaa luontoa enää olemassa.

Welcome to the Eero Järnefelt exhibition press conference on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 10:1520.3.2024 12:34:53 EET | Press release

The press conference for the exhibition will be held on Wednesday 3 April 2024 at 10:15, on site at the Ateneum and online. For more information, see below. From 5 April to 25 August 2024, the Ateneum Art Museum will present an exhibition that covers the entire career of Eero Järnefelt (1863–1937). A master depicter of nature and people, Järnefelt always sought emotion and truth. The exhibition will present the extensive oeuvre of Järnefelt, who grew up in a cultured, cosmopolitan family, and it will explore the artist’s significance for Finnish art and Finnishness. The varied nature depictions raise the question of whether the natural environments captured by the artist in the 19th and 20th centuries still exist.
