As the first operator in Finland, DNA has adopted the IPv6 support on a broad scale. During this spring, DNA's mobile subscriptions were the first to deploy IPv6, and since the beginning of June, the IPv6 support has also been available for all speed categories of DNA's cable broadband. In total, DNA has brought the IPv6 functionality to over two million consumer and corporate subscriptions.

In May, DNA brought the IPv6 support to DNA's 350 Mbps cable broadband subscriptions, and at the beginning of June, DNA extended the IPv6 functionality to all speed categories of the cable broadband. The support also applies to DNA's housing company broadband in the cable network. The IPv6 support will be added to DNA's Ethernet broadband subscriptions during the summer.

According to DNA's estimate, more than 92% of cable modems currently in use support the IPv6 functionality. Most of them will adopt the IPv6 functionality when they are restarted. About 40% of cable broadband subscribers have already taken the IPv6 support into use.

“The IPv6 deployment in 350 Mbps cable broadband has gone smoothly, and therefore, we decided to bring the functionality with a quick schedule also to other speed categories. We estimate that by the beginning of July the IPv6 functionality will be in use in about 100,000 cable broadband subscriptions,” says Head of Product Development Ville Partanen from DNA.

Almost 9% of the network traffic of smart phones in DNA's network is already using IPv6

As the first operator in Finland, DNA brought the mobile subscriptions that use the IPv6 support available on a broad scale. Currently, the functionality applies to all of DNA's mobile subscriptions for consumers and most of corporate mobile subscriptions, and it functions both in voice communication and mobile broadband subscriptions.

The IPv6 functionality can already be used in more than two million DNA's subscriptions in DNA's mobile communications and cable networks. In fact, the number of users and the amount of traffic in DNA's networks have started to increase rapidly. According to a recent measurement*), the number of users of DNA's subscriptions represents the majority of IPv6 users in Finland.

Almost 9% of the network traffic of smart phones in DNA's network already uses the IPv6 functionality. Popular services, such as Netflix, Youtube and Facebook support the IPv6 functionality.

DNA will automatically update subscriptions to IPv6-compatible form. The current IPv4 and new IPv6 protocols will function side by side, and many new terminal devices support the new protocol automatically, so the update will primarily require no action on the part of users.

What benefits will IPv6 bring to users?

Every device or service connected to the internet requires an IP address to form a connection. The explosive growth in the number of devices connected to the internet will eventually use up the IPv4 addresses currently being used. The larger number of IPv6 addresses will secure public IP addresses for all subscription types, mobile subscriptions included. IPv6 will also improve the quality of remote connections and services such as online gaming. The IPv6 protocol will also be useful in the rapidly growing Internet of Things (IoT), as separate addresses can be provided to all devices, ensuring the seamless operation of services.

DNA will participate in the National IPv6 Deployment Day on 9 June 2015.
