DNA’s 5G network already covers nearly 200 towns – Keuruu, Kuortane and Marttila the latest to be added

The 5G network currently covers the following districts of the newest 5G towns:

• Keuruu, Central Finland: The town’s entire central urban district will be provided with high-speed 5G coverage ensured with several base stations between January and February 2023. However, the construction work is just now getting started, so the current coverage includes mainly the districts of Seiponmäki, Kurkiniemi and Melonsaari.
• Kuortane, South Ostrobothnia: The 5G network that has now been built covers the Kuortane village centre and, in part, also its immediate surroundings. The finished network will be strengthened with one more base station during December.
• Marttila, Southwest Finland: The 5G network that has now been completed covers the Marttila village centre and, in part, also its immediate surroundings.

“It is great to welcome Keuruu, Kuortane and Marttila to enjoy 5G services, as these services also bring with them a whole new kind of data activity. In fact, our statistics show that 20% more data has been transferred this year using 5G subscriptions on consumers’ phones than with corresponding 4G subscriptions. The difference is even greater when looking at data subscriptions: a standard 5G data subscription is used to transfer 70% more data, and a fixed Home 5G data subscription up to 180% more data than a with 4G data subscription. Standard data subscriptions are used in tablets, computers and modems, for example, while the fixed Home 5G data subscription is used exclusively as an at-home Internet access solution”, says Jarkko Laari, VP, Radio Networks at DNA.

DNA has been building a 5G network that can operate in both the lower 700-megahertz and higher 3.5-gigahertz frequency bands around Finland. Lower frequencies offer a fast connection that is more than sufficient for normal Internet use and allow the network to cover a large area with good indoor coverage. Higher frequencies, on the other hand, offer gigabit-class connection speeds with minimal delay over a smaller coverage area. Lower frequencies are typically used in rural areas and less densely populated urban areas, whereas higher frequencies are used in more densely populated urban areas.

The construction of the 5G network also has the effect of updating the entire mobile network, as it requires old base stations to be replaced with new ones. This means faster 4G speeds and an improved user experience in the areas where the network is being modernised. In many cases, 5G also offers an excellent alternative to fixed-network broadband at home, so the completion of the network boosts the area’s competitiveness and expands consumers’ options for Internet services. A suitable device and subscription are needed to use 5G services.
