  • François Bausch, Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Luxemburg
  • Johanna Wallin, Director, Transport HSL
  • Stephan Besier, StadtbahnGestaltung, Leipzig, Germany

“Light Rail Day” is the leading conference for Tramway in the Nordic Countries. Next week “Light Rail Day” arrives to Helsinki on Monday and Tuesday for the first time in its history and the interest has been overwhelming. With more than 125 delegates and continuing registrations, the conference has good chances to be sold out. Finland is, for the time being, the leading European country regarding new tram systems in cities, starting from scratch. No wonder, that this year’s conference is coming up to new heights and an international audience is interested in seeing this Finnish approach. Many foreign delegates choose to arrive early in Helsinki to take part in the “Jokeri Light Rail Walk” on Monday morning, to hear more about “Jokeri as a system” and to present the actual Raide Jokeri line from an infrastructure and urban planning point of view. The offered 3 groups are overbooked and a waiting list is also existing for the visit of the Raide Jokeri depot in Roihupelto, where Škoda Group will show the brand-new “Artic XL Jokeri” tram, Made in Finland, with production in Otanmäki, Kainuu.

This Artic tram has a special story, which based the decision of the NLRA-Nordic Light Rail Association to award the “Nordic Light Rail Prize” in 1st Degree to the “father of the Artic”, Mr. Ollipekka Heikkilä, for his lifelong involvement and commitment to tram systems and especially vehicle engineering. The award will take place during “Light Rail Day”. More information about the award here: https://nlra.dk/the-award/

“Light Rail Day” is giving a look on future Mobility solutions. Experts from all over Europe will present with their lectures the state-of-art in technicism and research. Minister Bausch from Luxemburg will present the new mobility plan. By 2035, Luxemburg wants to become the leading country when it comes to public transport and the plans are really ambitious.

Both ministers will also take part in the panel debate „The importance of trams for future public transport and urban development”, joined also by Johanna Wallin, Director Traffic, HSL.

Thanks to ŠKODA GROUP for supporting “Light Rail Day” in an extraordinary way.
