Finnish chemical company Kiilto is launching a world-unique laundry powder where fossil-based raw materials are replaced with lignin – a by-product from the wood industry. The result: a halved carbon footprint, more effective washing, and new packaging that is both recycled and recyclable.

The key ingredient, lignin, is a biopolymer derived from Norwegian spruce. By incorporating this bio-based material, Kiilto replaces traditional fossil-based components in professional laundry solutions for workwear, restaurant linens, and hospital textiles.

“Lignin is abundant as a side stream from the wood industry, so no additional trees need to be cut down. This is exactly what circular economy is about – making use of resources that would otherwise not have been fully utilized,” says Tomi Peltonen, Kiilto’s product development manager.

Lignin not only significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the product but also offers superior protection against greying, ensuring laundry maintains its color and quality. Kiilto is likely the first company worldwide to incorporate lignin into laundry powders or textile detergents.

New Packaging with Lower Climate Impact

Alongside the product launch, Kiilto is updating the packaging for its Kiilto Pro Textile laundry powder. The previous cardboard packaging will be replaced with plastic.

“Many might be surprised to learn that this is a more environmentally friendly option. The new packaging is made entirely from recycled plastic and is fully recyclable, reducing its carbon footprint by around 5% compared to the previous version,” says Peltonen.
