Roadwork Site of the Year 2026 competition is now open
22.5.2026 11:06:39 EEST | Espoon kaupunki - Esbo stad | Press release
The Roadwork Site of the Year 2026 competition has started in Espoo. The aim of the competition is to reduce the harm roadwork causes to residents and to feature and reward construction sites that use good and innovative solutions to minimise the harm they may cause. The competition will be held in Espoo for the second time.

The competition helps show how the roadwork sites in Espoo have been successful whilst encouraging them to develop their operations so that everything runs even smoother from the point of view road users. The winner is chosen by a panel of judges that will make weekly visits to the sites that quality inspectors have selected in advance. This year, the panel of judges will focus on how the construction sites have taken children and young people into account. Supporting opportunities for children and young people – and ensuring that their everyday life is smooth and safe – is a key focus area of the Espoo Story.
The assessment is based on a qualitative examination and, in particular, how the construction sites have managed to reduce the harm caused to residents and other road users. The visited construction sites will receive a report of the visit and practical feedback that can help them mitigate or, ideally, eliminate any harm caused to residents. The quality inspectors will monitor the development of construction site activities throughout the summer. The winner of the competition will be announced in October at an event hosted by the MANK ry (Maarakennusalan neuvottelukunta, advisory board on civil engineering).
With the panel’s expertise and the competition, we hope that we can strengthen the positive experiences our residents have concerning roadwork sites and everyday environments. The panel of judges comprises the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired, the Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities, INFRA, Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce, Finnish Property Owners Rakli, HSL, HSY, the Finnish Cyclists’ Federation, Finnish Road Safety Council, Fortum, the Espoo Youth Council and the City of Espoo. Ramboll acts as the competition’s coordinator and its quality inspector in Espoo.
Competition process:
- Time 29 April–1 October
- During the summer, the panel of judges will monitor the performance of the construction sites participating in the competition, considering factors such as walking, cycling and driving near the site, the operating conditions of the actors, the way the construction site interacts with the residents, accessibility and safety. Assessments will be carried out during site visits throughout the summer.
- The winner of the competition and those receiving honourable mentions will be announced on 1 October at an event in Finlandia Hall, hosted by MANK ry.
